Curb excessive food speculation

The greed of financial speculators provoked food riots in the past when the basics people need to survive, things like rice, wheat, sugar - became unaffordable. When speculators bet on food, prices are distorted. It is often the poorest who can go hungry and suffer the most.

The European Commission proposed to allow countries to weaken the existing modest rules on food speculation even further. That’s why we have to convince the European Parliament to step up and end food speculation. Thousands of Europeans supported our campaign, yet the European Parliament failed to grab the chance. We will continue to seek a more justice and peaceful Europe. Have a look on our other campaigns.

Rise up against violence!

CETA vote

This 2017 International Women’s Day, millions of people across the globe marched and we used the momentum to launch a call to action, powered by the outrage and solidarity of thousands of us. With our partners in a European coalition, we are putting violence against women and girls back on the EU’s political agenda with a bang!

We are demanding that EU leaders take a stand for our human rights, and urgently ratify and implement the international convention to fight violence against women. With the EU’s ratification, the convention will grant a common standard of protection to Europe’s women in all member states - even those which refuse to fight violence nationally. The Council of the EU is the last bottleneck to making that happen, and they are stalling: they don’t think women’s rights are worth the trouble of intense negotiations.

That’s why our partners, the European Women’s Lobby, visited the Maltese EU Council Presidency some days ago to pass the message of the more than 60,000 people who have signed on to them.. Aren’t you one of them?- Sign now!

Stop monster-merger BaySanto!

Bayer and Monsanto are desperately trying to merge into one giant agri-chemical corporation. Together, they will control a huge slice of what what farmers grow, and ultimately what we eat. If the merger is to be successful, the two companies must gain approval of competition authorities all over the world, including from the EU. Bayer has managed to “convince” Donald Trump to back the mega-merger, and now there is really only one organisation that has enough clout to stop the deal -- the European Union.

While our fight is in Europe, the struggle against these mega-mergers is global. There are growing movements of farmers, consumers and citizens like us, who protest against it. None of the important competition authorities have yet signed off on the mergers. It is up to us to hold Margrethe Vestager accountable and demand to stop the merger. Join the fight and sign the petition now!

CETA: next steps

CETA vote

In February MEPs arrived in Strasbourg for one of the most important votes in the whole of this parliamentary session: to ratify the undemocratic trade deal with Canada called CETA. But they were in for a surprise when they got there - us!

We were there along with hundreds of other Europeans all with one single message -- vote no to CETA! We passed the thousands of messages from the WeMove community demanding that MEPs represent our interests before the interests of global business.

But most MEPs decided to back big business before their constituents, and the European Parliament voted in favour of CETA. It means that our efforts to stop CETA have so far failed. But fear not, we have plenty more chances to stop it.

CETA has to be approved by every single EU country and many regional parliaments too. This means if just one says no - CETA is dead. So let’s regroup and plan how we will continue our campaign to stop CETA.

A whole European Citizen’s Initiative to #StopGlyphosate

We know what a constant use of Glyphosate will mean for us, the people of Europe: sick people, dead animals, burnt grass, brown leaves, and a loss of biodiversity. Last year, we were able to block Monsanto’s plans in ways they did not expect. But it’s not over, and in 2017 they will be fighting hard to extend the currently short term approval of this toxic pesticide to 15 years - which is why we will be fighting even harder to stop them.

The kick off of the #StopGlyphosate - European Citizens’ Initiative was a wonderful day for our community! We got to meet with some of our members in Berlin, Paris, London, Madrid, Rome and Brussels. Check out the pictures from the launch events and brace yourself for the long campaign ahead, we have some big Monsanto lobby to fight - sign now!

Left to Freeze

When news and pictures emerged of the conditions refugees in Serbia and Greece were living in this winter -- outdoors, barely surviving the freezing temperatures -- we sprung into action. We raised an outstanding €64,000 to go directly to the organisations helping people on the ground.

Part of the donations have gone to Refugee Aid Serbia helping those braving the cold in Belgrade, as well as Fresh Response, a movement helping those who are stuck on the Serbian/Hungarian border and who face police brutality daily.

Are You Syrious? is building a mobile shower which will fit four showers, a gas-heated container with water, clean clothes packages, towels, and other vital material, such as soap and feminine products. This project will be entirely funded by the WeMove community and will soon be up and running, making its way through Serbia where people are in dire need of it.

Every single one of us should be proud of what we were able to do together. Borders, cultural differences, linguistic barriers -- nothing could stand in our way. Join more than 57,000 other Europeans and help us put pressure on the EU Ministers for Home Affairs and Migration to follow through with their commitment to help the refugees who arrived at Europe’s doorstep - sign!

Save the Soil

Soil is one of the most strategic resources of Europe as it ensures food security, biodiversity conservation and climate change regulation. It's time to protect the soils of Europe. Each passing minute, the soil is assaulted, suffocated, contaminated, exploited, poisoned, mistreated, and depleted. In Europe, there is no longer a specific law that protects the soil.

More than 400 associations have come together as part of the People4Soil coalition which launched a Citizen’s Initiative to ask the EU for specific regulations to protect the soil. Save the soil with your signature!

Stop speculators threatening us!

The banks never gave us back all the 4.5 trillion euros we paid them in aid following the financial crisis that hit Europe in 2010. People had to rescue the bankers and speculators responsible for the devastation of our economies and welfare.

Soon 10 key EU Finance Ministers will meet to discuss an agreement to clamp down on harmful speculation by applying a tax on dangerous financial transactions. The tax would raise money for public expenditure while discouraging the kind of speculation that helped lead to the economic collapse. It’s in our hands to raise our voice loud enough to make our collective outcry unmissable - join more than 290,000 other Europeans now. Sign!

A people-powered plug for tax evasion

Corporations have been taking us for a ride by using every trick in the book to avoid paying their fair share of taxes. But that could be about to end. The European Commission has proposed a first step to make giant corporations like Amazon and Facebook play by a common set of tax rules across Europe, and stop them from exploiting the differences in national corporate tax regimes.

Countries that help corporations dodge paying their taxes like Ireland, the Netherlands and Luxembourg could block the proposal, unless some big countries like France and Germany speak out now. A huge people-powered petition of more than 100,000 Europeans is a great start to let our Ministers know what we think - do you want to be part of the movement? Add your name.

Democracy for Sale Awards

The ongoing negotiations of the EU-US trade agreement, known as the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP), are happening behind closed doors, hand in hand with big business lobby groups. Their influence is so great that their collaboration with TTIP negotiators deserves closer scrutiny. Our contribution: to give the most successful business group in hijacking TTIP for corporations an award!

After more than 45 thousands of us voted for the winner of the Democracy for Sale Awards, we went all out and in a glittery mock Awards ceremony, where we presented the undisputed winner: the pesticides lobby, represented by huge corporate lobbying groups ECPA and CLA. Take a look at what happened in the ceremony in this 1,5 min video!
